The host nation, Germany, will take on Scotland today, June 14, in the opening match of EURO 2024, a tournament in which the host nation is expected to do only one thing: win.

It’s only just weeks ago that the European leagues came to a close, and fans were hit with having to wait a month or two for the new season of football to start.

The gap between the end of the season and the beginning of another has adequately been filled by the EURO 2024 tournament in Germany as the excitement continues for football fans across the world.

The European powerhouses have announced their squads, preparatory matches have been played, and it is now time for the showpiece itself, which begins on January 14, in Germany.

The first match of the tournament, as has always seen host nations play first, will see host nation Germany take on Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Germany are among the favourites to win the competition, and they need to lay an early marker for that when they take on Scotland.

In Scotland, though, Germany face a team that is set to give them a run for their money.

Steve Clarke’s men had an amazing qualification campaign, winning the first five of their qualification matches including a win over one of the tournament’s favourites, Spain.

The host nation may be encouraged by their record against the Scottish, though, after they beat them three times and drew only one in four previous matches between the two.

With some exciting young talents in the host nation’s ranks, like Jamal Musiala, Florian Witz, Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Harvetz and others, Germany will fancy their chances against Scotland in the opening match, and they will hope to go on as they chase a fourth European Championship crown, having already won it three times.

Since winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Germany have not had the best showings in tournaments, having exited the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments in the group stages.

In the last Euros, Germany exited in the round of 16.

Young Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, charged with winning EURO 2024, is aware of the pressure on him and his boys, and he feels Scotland may look to cash in on that pressure on the host nation to cause an upset in the opening match.

“We will have more pressure on us than Scotland and they will want to capitalise on that,” said Nagelsmann

Though Scotland cannot boast of established world stars like Germany can, Julian Nagelsmann believes they can be very dangerous.

“Scotland isn’t a team full of world stars, but that makes them dangerous because they are very agile players who give everything, with classic Scottish mentality,” Julian Nagelsmann told a press conference on Thursday.

The coach believes there is a lot of hope in his players, and that they can beat the pressure they are feeling right now.

Nagelsmann also feels the home advantage they have will help a lot

“When I look in my players’ eyes… I see a lot of belief and a lot of confidence, which is what I want… we have the home advantage, we want to win.”

“We can beat pressure, and we can beat Scotland as well.”

Germany captain, Ilkay Gundogan, believes the team is fired up for the first match, as they have the confidence of the coach, with each player knowing exactly what is expected of him on the pitch.

Ilkay Gundogan said: “The coach gives us confidence, a clear direction, he has discussed roles with us… everyone knows what is expected of them and can give their all on the pitch, and that helps us a great deal after the negative experiences of the last tournaments.”
