The excitement in the group stages of this year’s European Championship, EURO 2024, was palpable. It is about to get even more exciting as the round of sixteen stages of the tournament is upon us.

The group stages certainly treated fans to some shocking and interesting results.

From Germany hammering Scotland by 5 goals to 1 in the tournament’s first game, Romania beating Ukraine 3-0, Georgia beating the mighty Portugal in their last group game, to England struggling in all their group stage matches, there was a mixture of everything in the group stages of EURO 2024.

Spain were scintillating throughout the group stages, with a perfect 9 points out of 9 that included a victory over Italy through a Calafiori own-goal. La Roja beat Croatia 3-0 and Albania 1-0.

Italy qualified for the round of sixteen dramatically as they scored a last-minute goal against Croatia that sent the Croats home.

Finishing third and with just 2 points, Croatia were sent packing home.

France and the Netherlands succumbed top spot to Austria, finishing second and third respectively.

Belgium lost their first game to Slovakia, recovered to win their second match against Romania, but drew their last group game against Ukraine.

Belgium’s group will be in the records for some time as all four teams won 4 points. Something that had not happened before this year.

Romania topped the group, with Belgium and Slovakia joining them in the round of 16, but Ukraine missed out after finishing fourth.

This is a tale of “this life no balance.” Ukraine with four points, finishing fourth, are going home, while other teams with just three points but who finished third, are still in the tournament.

Georgia, making their tournament debut, qualified for the round of 16 after beating Portugal in their last game, a victory not many believed they could achieve.

If Portugal hadn’t qualified as group winners already, would the story have been different? Well, no one can tell.

Georges Mikautadze of Georgia emerged as the most prolific scorer after the first round with three goals, one in each of the three games in the group stages.

EURO 2024 R16 Pairings

With the group stages done, the round of 16 is upon us, albeit with a two-day break that allows the qualified teams to recharge and get back at it.

With the round of 16 kicking off on Saturday, June 29, we look at the pairings to see who the big teams are facing, as there is set to be even more excitement.

After the scare from Croatia, Italy come up against Switzerland in the first fixture of the round of 16. The Swiss finished behind Germany in their group.

The hosts, Germany, will take on Denmark, who finished second in their group, behind England.

On Sunday, June 30, England will battle Slovenia, while Spain take on tournament debutants, Georgia.

This is a kind draw for Spain, at least on paper, but given the story of Georgia so far, Willy Sanyol’s men cannot be written off that easily.

Monday, July 1, sees powerhouses, France and Belgium slug it out for a place in the last 8, as Portugal also battle Slovenia.

On July 2, the last games of the EURO 2024 round of sixteen fixtures have Romania rubbing shoulders with the Netherlands, and Austria taking on Turkey.

Which team(s) are you backing for the last 8?
