The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is turning up the heat on Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, after his recent $800 cash gift to evangelist Nana Agradaa sparked public outrage.
The party believes this gesture isn’t just a matter of poor judgment—it could be a breach of multiple financial and ethical laws.
Here’s a breakdown of the six major reasons why the NPP is calling for an immediate probe:
1. Suspicion of money laundering
The NPP alleges the cash gift may be tied to illegal financial activities, particularly money laundering. They believe the gesture violates Ghana’s Anti-Money Laundering Act and could be masking untraceable sources of wealth.
2. Breach of foreign exchange regulations
The party argues that the act may contravene Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act, questioning how such foreign currency was acquired and whether it was properly declared in line with national laws.
3. Violation of the code of conduct for public officers
According to the NPP, the recently launched Code of Conduct prohibits public officials from making such questionable financial gestures. Sammy Gyamfi’s act, they claim, undermines efforts to uphold transparency and accountability in public office.
4. Disproportionate wealth compared to declared income
The NPP pointed out that Mr Gyamfi has reportedly not drawn a salary since his appointment. They’re asking how he could afford to “gleefully” distribute such large sums of money if his official income doesn’t support it.
5. Call for OSP and CID to investigate all properties
At a press conference, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Ghana Police CID to not only investigate Gyamfi’s finances but also search his residences and assess his wealth for any red flags.
6. Demand for suspension or interdiction
The NPP is calling on President John Dramani Mahama to interdict or suspend Sammy Gyamfi pending a full investigation. They warned that failing to act swiftly would dent the President’s image and commitment to fighting corruption.
The NPP also referenced Sammy Gyamfi’s past comments on similar corruption allegations against former sanitation minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah, suggesting he is now entangled in the very issues he once criticized.
