The Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned of colder-than-usual weather conditions across the country, especially during early mornings and late nights, and says this pattern will persist until the end of August.

This temperature drop, known scientifically as the Aphelion Phenomenon, occurs when the Earth is farthest from the sun, resulting in cooler conditions.

Though this may seem like a welcome break from the usual heat, the cold spell can lead to health issues like colds, coughs, flu, and breathing difficulties.

Here are simple, practical ways to stay safe and healthy during this chilly period.

Dress appropriately for the weather
Wear layers of warm clothing, particularly during the early morning and at night. Jackets, sweaters, head covers, socks, and scarves are essential. Children and the elderly, who are more vulnerable to cold, should be fully covered at all times.

Keep indoor spaces warm
Close windows and doors to keep cold air out, especially at night. Use heavy curtains, warm bedding, and if available, safe heating devices. A hot water bottle or warm cloth on the feet before bed can also help retain body heat.

Pay attention to vulnerable groups
Older adults, babies, and individuals with asthma or respiratory conditions need extra care. Check on them regularly, ensure they are warmly dressed, and provide them with hot meals and drinks.

Stay hydrated and eat warm meals
Drinking warm fluids like tea, soup, or porridge helps maintain body temperature and supports immune function. Warm, balanced meals also provide the energy your body needs to fight off infections.

Avoid early morning workouts outdoors
If you usually jog or exercise outside in the early hours, consider delaying until temperatures rise slightly. Cold air can trigger respiratory issues, so exercising indoors is advisable when mornings are particularly chilly.

Maintain good respiratory hygiene
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and wash hands frequently. These simple actions help prevent the spread of infections that become more common in cold weather.

Keep informed through weather updates
Follow updates from the Ghana Meteorological Agency and local news for daily forecasts. Staying informed allows you to plan your clothing, outings, and household arrangements accordingly.

Consult a doctor if symptoms persist
Don’t ignore signs like persistent coughing, breathing problems, or body chills. Seek medical attention early rather than resorting to self-medication.

By taking these precautions, Ghanaians can stay warm, healthy, and safe during this unusual weather period.
