Two Ghanaian soldiers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon have been seriously injured following an attack in southern Lebanon, prompting the Ghanaian government to formally protest to the United Nations and demand immediate accountability.

The attack occurred on March 6, targeting members of the Ghanaian battalion deployed as part of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission. Both injured soldiers are receiving medical attention, and the government says its thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa issued a formal statement on March 7, confirming that Ghana had written directly to UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanding a full, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the attack. Ghana is also calling for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice, describing the assault as a grave violation of international law and the protections guaranteed to UN peacekeeping personnel.

The ministry further urged the UN to take concrete steps to strengthen the safety and security of Ghana’s contingent and all peacekeepers operating in the volatile region. “The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the statement read.

Ireland has also condemned the attack, and the Israeli Ambassador to Ghana described it as a “tragic event.” UNIFIL has separately issued its own condemnation of the strikes that caused the injuries.

Ghana, one of Africa’s most consistent contributors to UN peacekeeping operations globally, reaffirmed its commitment to international peace efforts while making clear that the safety of its personnel on the ground is non-negotiable.
