NDC has suspended its constituency chairman, Stephen Ofosu Agyare, for five months with immediate effect.
The decision came from the party’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) after a meeting on July 21, 2026, following a petition filed against the chairman by the Member of Parliament for the area, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor. The committee also considered recommendations from the Central Regional Council of Elders.
In the suspension letter signed by General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party stated: “Having extensively deliberated on the matter, FEC found sufficient basis to invoke the provision of Article 48(4) and Article 48(6) of the party’s Constitution. Accordingly, you are hereby suspended from your position as Constituency Chairman of Awutu Senya East Constituency for a period of five (5) months, effective immediately.”
The case has also been referred upstairs for a deeper look. “FEC has further referred the matter to the National Disciplinary Committee for investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the Constitution of the Party. During the period of your suspension, you are required to refrain from performing any functions or exercising any authority as Constituency Chairman until the matter is finally determined or otherwise directed by the Party,” the letter added.
The gist behind the beef
The contents of the MP’s petition have not been made public, but the crisis in the constituency has been boiling for months, and the alleged reason behind it has left tongues wagging.
An NDC executive in the constituency, who serves as the MP’s spokesperson, claimed in an interview that the whole fight boils down to a failed marriage proposal. According to him, the chairman wanted to marry Naa Koryoo as a second wife, and claimed she had agreed to marry him if he helped her become the NDC parliamentary candidate in 2020, only for her to turn him down afterwards.
“One of the main things that has brought about this division is that he (the constituency chairman) wanted to marry Honourable Naa Koryoo, in addition to his wife. But the woman said ‘no’. Then he said, ‘It is the reason why I helped you to become an MP. So, if you knew you wouldn’t marry me, why did you accept my help then?’
“But she told him that, ‘You also did not say anything to me; I thought you were just helping me to campaign,” he said in Twi.
The suspension also follows weeks of chaos in Kasoa, including a leaked audio in which the chairman allegedly made comments suggesting a past intimate relationship with the MP, a demonstration by the constituency’s women’s wing demanding his removal, and appeals to First Lady Lordina Mahama to step in. Interestingly, another group of women organisers later staged a solidarity visit to the chairman’s residence to back him, showing just how deeply divided the constituency has become.
