Kumasi-based broadcasting giant Kessben Media has officially waded into the storm surrounding its presenter DJ KA, after a private video allegedly involving him set social media on fire.
The video began making rounds on Tuesday, July 21, instantly turning the Kessben FM presenter, known for championing classic Ghanaian music, into the biggest trending topic in the country.
In a press statement sighted by Ghbase, the company confirmed it is aware of the video, describing it as material involving its staff “in a sexually compromising situation.”
Management wasted no time distancing the brand from the mess. According to the statement, the company “does not condone such acts, the actions of the staff member, and the circulation of the material in any form,” adding that it “disassociates its brand, associates, assigns, agents, employees and followers from the actions of the staff member involved.”
The company has launched an internal inquest, describing it as “a first step towards bringing full disclosure to the unfortunate occurrence,” and assured the public it “will not shield any person found to be complicit in this situation.”
As for DJ KA himself, he has been asked to stay off duty and submit to the inquest. Kessben added that he will be supported through the aftermath, noting that “the attention would include counselling, rehabilitation and legal assistance where necessary.”
Meanwhile, the presenter has not stayed quiet. A day after the video surfaced, DJ KA issued a public apology to his family, fans and employer, taking full ownership of the situation. “I take full responsibility for my actions,” he stated, describing the recording of the video as “a serious error in judgment.”
In a separate reaction on Snapchat, DJ KA dropped a bombshell, claiming the video is actually four years old and that someone had been using it to blackmail him. He did not reveal the identity of the alleged blackmailer or say whether he intends to take legal action.
Kessben’s statement also carried a strong caution to the public, pointing to “the existing cyber security implications and the existing laws regarding the possession and circulation of such content,” and pleading with Ghanaians “to curtail the sharing and distribution of the videos.”
The saga has split social media down the middle, with some Ghanaians mocking the presenter while others, including Prophet Ogyaba, have jumped to his defence, calling out the hypocrisy of those sharing the video while condemning him.
