Burkina Faso military gov’t claims foiled coup attempt

Burkina Faso’s military government has announced the successful disruption of what it described as a major coup attempt aimed at removing junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traoré from power.

According to authorities, the plot was set to culminate in an armed assault on the presidential palace on April 16, 2025.

The alleged conspiracy involved both active and former military officers, as well as individuals reportedly affiliated with terrorist groups. Government officials say the operation was uncovered through intercepted communications between a senior military officer and leaders of armed extremist factions.

As investigations continue, several members of the military, including high-ranking officers, have been arrested. One of the key suspects, Captain René David Ouédraogo, remains at large.

Officials believe the coup attempt was orchestrated in part by former Burkinabé military personnel currently residing in Côte d’Ivoire, with Major Joanny Compaoré and Lieutenant Abdramane Barry named as central figures.

This marks the second time the junta has accused exiled figures in Côte d’Ivoire of plotting to destabilize the country, following similar claims in 2024.

Burkina Faso has been under military rule since September 2022, when Captain Traoré seized power amid growing insecurity and widespread jihadist violence. Despite promises to restore order, significant portions of the country remain under insurgent control.

The 2025 Global Terrorism Index identified Burkina Faso as the most affected country by terrorism in 2024, recording over 1,500 deaths from related incidents.

The government maintains that its efforts to secure national stability are ongoing, although critics have raised concerns about governance, press freedom, and the restriction of civil liberties.

The reported foiling of the coup adds to a climate of political uncertainty in a nation grappling with complex security and institutional challenges.
