Reno Omokri calls out the ‘Traoré myth’: 7 bold claims shaking the internet

Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré has been hailed as a modern-day pan-African icon by many across the continent.

But according to outspoken Nigerian author and political commentator Reno Omokri, much of what people believe about Traoré is a cleverly crafted illusion.

In a viral post on X, Omokri launched a fierce critique of what he calls “AI-driven propaganda” and misinformation surrounding Traoré’s leadership. Here’s a breakdown of his biggest claims:

Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré is often praised online as a revolutionary Pan-African figure. But Nigerian author and political commentator Reno Omokri is not buying the hype.

In a viral post on X, he claimed the narrative around Traoré is built on lies, manipulation, and even artificial intelligence.

Here are seven bold claims Omokri made that have set social media ablaze:

1. “Those Traoré speeches are AI-generated.”
Omokri believes many videos of Captain Traoré speaking fluent English are not real. He says they are AI creations designed to appeal to a wider African audience.

2. “Traoré can’t speak English fluently.”
According to Omokri, Traoré avoids live interviews because he would be exposed as not fluent in English, contradicting the image presented in viral videos.

3. “Burkina Faso’s debts are rising, not falling.”
Dismissing the claim that Traoré has paid off national debts, Omokri cited reports showing Burkina Faso’s debt is around 65% of its GDP—worse than Nigeria and Ghana.

4. “Free housing for all? That’s a lie.”
He also rejected claims that Traoré is building free houses for all Burkinabe citizens, labeling such stories as pure fiction.

5. “Press freedom is under attack.”
Omokri accused the Traoré regime of jailing journalists like Guezouma Sanogo, Luc Pagbelguem, and Boukari Ouoba, suppressing dissenting voices.

6. “Africans are falling for fake news.”
He pointed out how people across the continent believe in easily debunked conspiracies—like a supposed US general planning to invade Burkina Faso—without checking facts.

7. “The country is still under serious threat.”
Omokri highlighted that Burkina Faso ranks first on the 2024 and 2025 Global Terrorism Index and said rebels still control large parts of the country.
