Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has become a household name for his outspoken, often abrasive commentary on corruption, celebrity excesses, and societal double standards. But his boldness hasn’t come without consequence.
The social critic has faced several legal battles, drawing national attention and raising questions about freedom of expression, defamation, and the abuse of cyber laws in Nigeria.
Here are six major incidents that have kept VDM entangled with the law.
1. Mercy Chinwo defamation suit
VeryDarkMan ignited outrage when he accused popular gospel singer Mercy Chinwo of siphoning $345,000 in a marriage gone wrong. In response, Chinwo filed a defamation suit, demanding ₦1.1 billion in damages and submitting video evidence to back her claim. An Abuja High Court issued a bench warrant for VDM’s arrest when he failed to appear, fueling public debate over the boundaries of online commentary.
2. Cyberbullying allegations by Tonto Dikeh and Iyabo Ojo
VDM’s criticism of actresses Tonto Dikeh and Iyabo Ojo led to cyberbullying charges. He was arrested and detained in May 2024 after being accused of publishing offensive and injurious content against the two celebrities. Though granted bail, the case added to growing fears over how cybercrime laws are used to clamp down on digital voices.
3. Arrest over viral skit impersonating a police officer

In another instance, VDM found himself in court for impersonating a police officer in a satirical skit. Appearing in uniform and calling himself a “CSP of an online division,” he was arrested and granted ₦2 million bail. He later issued an apology, claiming ignorance of the legal implications. The case reignited conversations about comedy, law, and the fine line between parody and offense.
4. Arrest over public exposure of a suspected fraudster
VDM was arrested at his Abuja residence in 2024 after publicly exposing a man alleged to have defrauded a Nigerian living abroad. His lawyer claimed the arrest was an attempt to protect the fraud suspect and silence his client. Though VDM was later released, the arrest highlighted concerns around protecting whistleblowers and the criminalization of public advocacy.
5. Allegation of EFCC Plot Against Him
In 2025, VDM accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of plotting to arrest him on false grounds. He claimed his frequent criticisms of the EFCC chairman had made him a target. Though the commission did not comment, the accusation stirred fears about state repression and retaliation against outspoken critics.
6. Legal backing from Femi Falana chambers

Throughout his legal challenges, VDM has enjoyed the support of one of Nigeria’s most respected legal minds, Femi Falana (SAN). Falana’s chambers have helped him navigate arrests and secure bail, providing legitimacy to his broader fight for accountability and justice in the public space. Their backing has also elevated the seriousness with which his cases are perceived.
The bigger picture
VDM’s legal battles have made him a controversial figure in Nigeria’s digital landscape. While some view him as a fearless advocate challenging the establishment, others believe he’s reckless and unfiltered.
Either way, his story is shaping the conversation around free speech, activism, and digital rights in the country.
