The Judicial Service of Ghana has announced that all lawyers will be exempted from court appearances on Monday, June 30, 2025, in observance of Martyrs’ Day, a solemn national occasion dedicated to honouring the memory of fallen judicial heroes.
In a circular signed by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and addressed to all judges and magistrates, the judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to tradition by granting permission for members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to withdraw their legal services on that day.
“Approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the letter dated June 17, 2025, read.
Martyrs’ Day is one of the most significant commemorative events in Ghana’s judicial calendar. It honours the memory of Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, as well as Major Sam Acquah (Rtd.), who were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982, during a brutal period in the nation’s political history.
