Afropop sensation Mayorkun has opened up about his latest industry move, crediting Nigerian superstar Davido for playing a major role in securing his new record deal with Sony Music Africa.
In an interview with 3Music TV during a promotional tour in Ghana, the singer, known for hits like “Let Me Know” and “Certified Loner,” expressed deep appreciation for his former label boss.
Aside from having my label, right now I am also with Sony Africa. Shout out to Davido for that as well, he facilitated the deal,” Mayorkun said.
This revelation further cements the long-standing relationship between the two artistes, despite Mayorkun’s exit from Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2021 after five successful years under the label.
Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, was discovered by Davido in 2016 after a Twitter freestyle of him covering one of Davido’s songs went viral.
That moment sparked the birth of a stellar career marked by several hit songs and a fan base that spans across Africa and beyond.
Since leaving DMW, Mayorkun has pushed forward as an independent artist, establishing his own label while still maintaining ties with industry powerhouses like Davido.
His new partnership with Sony Music Africa is expected to further elevate his brand, giving him broader distribution and international exposure.
Mayorkun was in Ghana to promote his latest single, stirring excitement among fans about upcoming collaborations and possible joint projects with Ghanaian artistes.
He burst onto the scene in 2016 with “Eleko”, his debut single under DMW, which went viral and quickly positioned him as one of Nigeria’s most promising young acts.
Over the years, he’s released chart-topping tracks like “Mama,” “Che Che,” “Up to Something,” and “Geng.”
His debut album, “The Mayor of Lagos” (2018), received critical acclaim and solidified his place in Nigeria’s Afrobeats movement.
In 2021, he followed up with “Back in Office,” showcasing growth in both sound and lyrical maturity.
