Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), is facing a formal petition submitted to President John Dramani Mahama by EC staffer Joseph Blankson Adumadzie seeking her removal alongside her deputies, Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey.

The petition, issued on Monday, November 24, cites alleged misconduct that the petitioner says undermines the credibility and independence of Ghana’s electoral system.

Mr Adumadzie confirmed that the petition was filed under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which provides the procedure for the removal of heads of independent constitutional bodies.

He said the document is based on 12 counts of misbehaviour, including allegations of cronyism, abuse of office, and gross incompetence.

He argued that the conduct of the three officials has eroded public confidence in the Commission.

Mensa, who was appointed EC Chair in July 2018, has previously faced scrutiny over procurement disputes, the compilation of the 2020 voters’ register, and transparency concerns raised by political stakeholders.

The petitioner said his action is motivated by a desire to protect the Constitution and strengthen accountable governance, emphasising the need to uphold the dignity of the EC as central to a credible democratic process.

Mr Adumadzie called on President Mahama to refer the petition to the Chief Justice to determine a prima facie case in line with Article 146 procedures.
