Gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known by his stage name New Jerusalem is dead at the age of 53.

New Jerusalem was widely celebrated for blending Tiv Swange rhythms with Christian evangelism, a style that earned him both national and international recognition.

His music resonated far beyond Nigeria’s borders, leaving a lasting spiritual and cultural legacy.

His passing drew heartfelt tributes, notably from former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, who led a condolence visit to the late artist’s residence in Makurdi.

During the visit, Ortom reflected on New Jerusalem’s global reach, recounting a personal experience in Australia, where one of the singer’s tracks was used in a teaching session.

Ortom also expressed a deep personal connection with the family and pledged continued support, especially to the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, which Israel passionately led during his lifetime.

In a touching moment, the late singer’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, revealed that one of Israel’s sons had been named “Ortom” in honour of the former governor’s unwavering support over the years.

Israel Terhemba Ikyereve is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, their four children, and several extended family members.

His final burial rites have been scheduled for Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State.
