The seat became vacant following the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including the Tamale Central MP.

The resolution was made during a National Steering Committee meeting held on August 11, 2025, at the party’s headquarters, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution.

The NPP cited the need to avoid further polarization in the country during this critical period, adding that the acrimony and tension that often come with by-elections should be prevented.
