The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election. The decision follows the untimely passing of the late Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed in the tragic August 6 helicopter crash.
Below are the key points from the party’s official statement.
1. Decision to withdraw from the race
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced that it will not participate in the Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election to replace the late Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
2. Reason behind the vacancy
The seat became vacant following the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including the Tamale Central MP.
3. Meeting that sealed the decision
The resolution was made during a National Steering Committee meeting held on August 11, 2025, at the party’s headquarters, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution.
4. Consideration for national unity
The NPP cited the need to avoid further polarization in the country during this critical period, adding that the acrimony and tension that often come with by-elections should be prevented.
5. Honouring the late MP’s memory
The party believes the most fitting tribute to the late MP is to focus on national priorities, such as fighting illegal mining (galamsey), and ensuring a smooth, peaceful replacement for the Tamale Central seat.
6. Commitment to national interest
When the Electoral Commission opens nominations under Article 112(5) of the Constitution, the NPP has confirmed it will stand down from the contest in line with what it calls the “national interest.”
