The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has taken a swipe at National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, over what he describes as persistent and unjustified attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the MP expressed deep concern over the NDC’s recent posture towards the EC, warning that such actions could destabilise Ghana’s democratic structure.

“Asiedu Nketia has done politics for long. He should be the one showing us the right thing,” Awuah said. “You don’t go around accusing the EC of being incompetent while you are the ones creating the problems.”

He cautioned that if the current trend of political interference and inflammatory rhetoric is not checked, Ghana may face long-term consequences.

“If this issue is not resolved, it can bring bigger problems,” the MP stressed. “Every government may want to have their own EC, and that’s not good for democracy.”

Referring to what he sees as a broader agenda, Baffour Awuah alleged that the NDC’s actions suggest an intent to remove the current EC Chairperson, drawing parallels to the controversial exit of the Chief Justice.

“Their actions show that they will even be behind removing the EC Chair, just like they did to the Chief Justice,” he claimed.

While acknowledging the possibility of escalating political pressure, the Manhyia South MP called on Ghana’s judiciary and any oversight committees that may be tasked with reviewing related matters to act independently and in the interest of the nation.

“With what they are doing and saying, it won’t be shocking at all.

“But even if it gets there, I hope the judges and the committee that may look into the issue will rise to the occasion and serve the interest of the nation.”

Ending on a firm note, Awuah issued a warning to the NDC leadership: “Ghanaians are watching Asiedu Nketia and his NDC people who are eager to see the removal of the EC. But when the time for elections comes, they will show you where power truly lies.”
