We are not begging, we are reclaiming – Ghanaian activist declares support for Burkina Faso’s Captain Traoré

A Ghanaian activist has voiced strong support for Burkina Faso’s transitional leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, stating that the struggle in Burkina Faso is one shared across the African continent, particularly by Ghanaians.

The activist made the remarks during what was described as a symbolic show of solidarity.

“Yes, this is a show of solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso and their leader, Captain Traore. Yeah, to let them know they’re not alone, right? Whatever is happening in Burkina Faso is happening everywhere, particularly in Ghana.

So today’s a show of solidarity with our people in Burkina Faso,” the activist stated.

Drawing parallels between current political developments in the region and historical patterns of colonial and neo-colonial control, he criticized the undue influence of France and the United States in African affairs, specifically targeting France’s grip on Francophone economies.

“America and France seem so concerned about Traore and Burkina Faso, right?

The question is, what is their business in Burkina Faso?… 14 of [the former French colonies] till date, don’t have their own ministry of finance.

They always have to keep their monies in the ministry of finance in France… Where does this make sense?” he asked.

The activist highlighted France’s paradoxical global gold reserves despite having no active gold mines within its borders, suggesting that Burkina Faso’s vast gold resources have long been exploited without meaningful benefit to its people.

According to him, the recent moves by the Burkinabé government to assert full control over its natural resources—including gold—are justified and long overdue.

He also referenced a striking moment from Ghana’s recent presidential inauguration on January 7, 2025, where Captain Traoré was the guest of honour.

“He was applauded even more than the president who was being sworn in in Ghana. That tells you how popular he is,” he emphasized.

The activist did not mince words when addressing France and the United States: “France should deal with their nonsense in France and leave Burkina Faso alone… America is well in over $3 trillion in debt. They should deal with their nonsense and leave Traore alone.”

In closing, the activist issued a call to action aimed at African youth across the continent:

“This is not just the Burkina Faso fight. This is an African fight. Traore has shown us that it is possible for us to take ownership and control of our nations… We are not negotiating. We are not begging. We are reclaiming. Thank you.”
