The Ghana Police Service has in a statement mentioned that they have stepped in to save the 12-year-old girl who had been married to the 63 year old Nungua Chief Priest while they conduct further investigations into the matter.
Over the weekend, Ghanaians were agitated after news of the Gborbu Wulomo getting married to a 12-year-old broke with many expressing disgust and calling on state authorities to intervene as it is against the constitution of the land.
In an official statement from the Ghana Police Service, they stated that they have placed the girl and her mother under police protection and working with the Ministry of Gender, children and Social Protection and the department of welfare to give the little girl the support she needed.
Yesterday Ghbase.com.gh published a story of a lady who seems to be close to the family explaining that, the ceremony that happened did not mean the girl would be engaging in anything s*x with the Chief priest until she turns 18 and that there are people who have been assigned to do so on her behalf.
Given that the Chief priest is 63 years old, by the time she would be 18, he would be 69 which is still weird but her argument is that, the girl in question has always been a queen mother since the age of 7 and her family have been aware of that and she was chosen by the ‘gods’
Well, with the Ghana police intervening in the situation, it’s in a way helped calm nerves but still people are wondering why the man has not been arrested yet. We do not have any information on what the police intends to do to him at the time of this publication but given that they said they are still investigating, we would share the details with you when anything comes up.
After the police issued the statement, some Ghanaians expressed satisfaction in the comment section under the post:
Mike Perez: This should be a case study for all traditions and customs across the length and breath of the country esp those that flout the laws of the land and also infringe on the fundamental human rights of citizens . Most of our traditions and customs needs a very thorough review
Senior Kwame Jonathan: Beautiful. This is so refreshing! Good job done Ghana Police Service
Jyoti Janak Dhawale: Thank you! Irrespective of custom and tradition, time has changed. I am glad the law took its course.
Serwaa Prempeh: Thank you so much Ghana Police Service. That was swift and we trusted you to deliver…….
